Nutrition 101: Getting Back to the Basics This Summer

Summer is one of the best times of the year to refocus on healthy eating.

The days are longer, local produce is becoming abundant, and many of us naturally feel motivated to spend more time outdoors, move our bodies, and take better care of ourselves.

The good news? Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated.

At Vitality, we believe some of the best nutrition advice is also some of the simplest.

Learn to Cook

One of the most powerful things you can do for your health is learn to prepare your own meals.

Cooking allows you to:

  • Control the quality of ingredients
  • Reduce processed foods
  • Eat more mindfully
  • Develop a healthier relationship with food

You don’t need to become a professional chef. Start with a few simple recipes and build from there.

There are countless resources available today, from cookbooks and YouTube channels to social media accounts dedicated to healthy, simple meals. Find a few recipes you enjoy and make them regularly.

As a team, we’re big believers in cooking from scratch whenever possible. Think about the way previous generations prepared food: simple ingredients, shared meals, and time spent in the kitchen.

Focus on Whole Foods

If there’s one nutrition principle that stands the test of time, it’s this:

Eat foods that look like food.

Try to build your meals around:

  • Quality meats and fish
  • Eggs
  • Seasonal fruits
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Healthy fats

At the same time, try to reduce foods that come from a package, box, or factory whenever possible.

Highly processed foods, refined carbohydrates, and excess sugar have become staples in modern diets, yet they are often some of the biggest obstacles to good health.

Enjoy Seasonal Foods

Summer gives us access to some incredible local produce.

Fresh berries, tomatoes, greens, herbs, and seasonal vegetables are not only delicious, they’re often more nutrient-dense and environmentally friendly than foods shipped from thousands of kilometres away.

A great goal is to visit:

  • Local farmers’ markets
  • Local farms
  • Independent grocers
  • Your neighbourhood butcher

You’ll often discover incredible food quality right in your own community.

The 100-Kilometre Challenge

Years ago, a documentary called Food, Inc. helped popularize the idea of eating food produced close to home.

The concept is simple:

Whenever possible, try to eat food grown or raised within 100 kilometres of where you live.

Benefits include:

  • Fresher food
  • Supporting local farmers and businesses
  • Reduced environmental impact
  • Greater connection to seasonal eating

You may be surprised by how much incredible food is available right here in Quebec.

Remember the 80/20 Rule

Healthy eating doesn’t require perfection.

One of the simplest and most sustainable nutrition strategies is the 80/20 rule.

Try to make healthy, intentional choices about 80% of the time, while leaving room for flexibility and enjoyment during the remaining 20%.

The goal is consistency—not perfection.

Unfortunately, many people unknowingly live the opposite way, making healthy choices only 20% of the time and struggling with the consequences.

Small choices made consistently have a powerful impact over time.

Don't Forget Hydration

Nutrition isn’t just about food.

Hydration plays a critical role in:

  • Energy levels
  • Recovery
  • Digestion
  • Joint health
  • Mental clarity

A simple rule of thumb we often recommend is:

1 litre of water per 50 pounds of body weight per day.

Examples:

  • 100 lbs = 2 litres
  • 150 lbs = 3 litres
  • 200 lbs = 4 litres

Whenever possible:

  • Drink filtered water
  • Choose glass or stainless-steel containers over plastic
  • Increase intake on hot days and during exercise

Keep It Simple This Summer

Nutrition doesn’t need to be complicated.

If you focus on these few principles, you’ll be well on your way:

  • Learn to cook
  • Use fresh ingredients
  • Eat more whole foods
  • Limit processed foods and refined sugars
  • Shop local whenever possible
  • Follow the 80/20 rule
  • Stay hydrated

The small choices you make every day often have the greatest impact on your long-term health.

We hope these simple reminders help you enjoy a healthy, active, and vibrant summer.

See you next month!
